What is my ideal classroom leaning community and how might I develop it?
This semester I am in a Kindergarten class. So far I have really enjoyed it. Some of the students are new to school and have to learn how to behave in a classroom. I thought at the beginning I was not going to have fun because I have already done three years in Kindergarten as an Assistant. I was completely wrong. My Collaborating Teacher (CT) makes Kindergarten so much fun and the students in her classroom really enjoy being there with her.

In the classroom, there is an all about me board. Since many of these students did not know each other at the beginning of the school year it is important that they become a community in the classroom. The first thing is to get to know one another. One way that the teacher has this happen is each student brings in an “All About Me” bag that contains some of their favorite things. Many of the students brought in their favorite toys or stuffed animals. Some brought in pictures of their family. My CT even asked me to do one in order for the class to get to know me. I was able to share with them my boys, my favorite book and my favorite sport. It made me feel like part of the classroom community.
The whole school is one big community who looks after each other and reminds each other of how they should be behaving. At every intersection in the school, there are words to remind students of how they should treat others. The school also has rules that are located in the hallways around the school. The school is also very welcoming to parents. The have a lot of parent volunteers who come help out in the classroom and in the front office.
In the classroom, the students sit in groups of three. There is a table captain who is in charge of getting out their notebooks and getting the math manipulatives. This is how I would like my students to sit in my future classroom. They are able to do group work easily and when they are working on individual work they can ask their table group for help as needed.
When thinking about my future classroom, I want the learning community to work well with each other. I feel that this experience is going to help me learn how to create the community that works best for me and my students.
