The beginning of every school year is an exciting time for students. Introducing students to Writer’s Workshop is one of the very important items on my agenda. All Writer’s Workshop areas (editing table, publishing table and small group discussion table) will contain paper, pencils, pens, highlighters and reference materials. In my classroom, prewriting and drafting will be done at the students’ desks. Clear boundaries and rules will be established and on display so the students know exactly what I expect from them. There will be time for student suggestions and revisions to the rules so they feel a part of the writing process. I will use a PowerPoint to introduce the Writer’s Workshop and the 6 traits of good writing. During the next few weeks, I will model the writing process and students will begin to actively use the various areas to refine and publish their writing pieces.
