Option ONE: Consider "what actions have I taken" and respond to at least two of the following:
In what classroom moments, did you feel like the teacher you hope to be? When did you not feel like the teacher you hope to be? What might you try to create more moments of alignment?
My first semester as an intern, I work with a 5th grader who was below level in reading. She had a hard time completing homework and keeping up with her peers while reading. She became my inquiry student that semester. At the end of the semester, the whole class made me cards wishing me luck and telling me thank you. Her card stood out to me the most because not only did she thank me for helping her out but she talked about how her grades were improving. She also stated that she knew I did not have to help her as much as I did but she was happy for it. That moment reminded me of why I was getting into teaching in the first place. I think going into the field I must remind myself more that I may not be able to reach all my students the way I reached her. I will just try my hardest to be there and help my students when needed.
Another moment in the classroom that reminds me of why I wanted to go into teaching is that moment when the light bulb comes on. I love to see the students’ faces when they connect to what they are learning and begin to understand the concept that is being taught. For this to happen, I know I need to find multiple ways to teach. All students have different learning styles and as a teacher, I have to try and find many ways to teach them.
What passion/interests do you bring to your work as an intern that you would like to explore with your students?
I love to read. I will read just about anything. I would like to explore having a book club for students who share my passion for reading. Book Club would meet once a month during lunch. We could eat in the classroom or find a picnic table outside if the weather it nice. I would like to have each student pick a book that they are interested in. We can have discussions about the books that the students like. There is never enough time to do this during the academic day.
Another passion I have is for acting and theater. I would like to incorporate this into the classroom to help students learn new concepts. I saw a science teacher have the students create motions for each of the vocabulary words for the unit. All the students enjoyed this and it was helpful for them. I even noticed some of them using the motions during the unit test. I would like to include more role playing to help students. I feel that when students research and then come up with a play or pantomime it helps them remember the content better.
